Diabetes--What You Need to Know About This Hidden Danger

Diabetes is a disease in which blood glucose levels are above normal. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose (sugar) for our bodies to burn to create energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, produces a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes large amounts of sugar to build up in your blood.

The actual cause of diabetes continues to be a mystery, although both genetics and environmental factors such as obesity appear to play major roles. Diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations. According to the Center for Disease Control, diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. As of 2002, 18.2 million people in the U.S.--6.3 percent of the population--had diabetes, with 1.3 million new cases being diagnosed each year. The National Institutes of Health also estimate that an additional 5.2 million people have diabetes without actually being aware of it.

There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, which was previously called insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile-onset diabetes, accounts for about 10% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. Type 2 diabetes, which was called non-insulin-dependent or adult-onset diabetes, accounts for the remaining 90%. Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that only pregnant women get. If not treated, it can cause problems for both the baby and the mother. Gestational diabetes develops in 2% to 5% of all pregnancies, but usually disappears when the pregnancy is over.

Diabetes is a serious disease and phrases such as "a touch of diabetes" or "your blood sugar is a little high" tend to dismiss the fact that diabetes is a major killer of Americans. In addition to the lives that are lost, diabetes has a tremendous economic impact in the United States. The National Diabetes Education Program estimates the cost of diabetes in 2002 was $132 billion. Of this amount, $92 billion was due to direct medical costs and $40 billion due to indirect costs such as lost workdays, restricted activity, and disability due to diabetes. The average medical expenditure for a person with diabetes was $13,243, or 5.2 times greater than the cost for a person without diabetes. In addition, 11 percent of national health care expenditures went to diabetes care.

In response to this growing health burden of diabetes, the diabetes community has three choices: prevent diabetes; cure diabetes; and improve the quality of care of people with diabetes to prevent devastating complications. All three approaches are being actively pursued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Many government agencies, at all levels, are involved in educational campaigns in an attempt to prevent diabetes, especially type 2. Several approaches to "cure" diabetes are also being pursued: pancreas transplantation, islet cell transplantation (islet cells in the pancreas produce insulin), the development of an artificial pancreas, and genetic manipulation where fat or muscle cells that do not normally make insulin have a human insulin gene inserted and are then transplanted into people with type 1 diabetes.

While there is yet no cure for diabetes, healthy eating, physical activity, and insulin injections are the basic therapies for type 1 diabetes. For those with type 2 diabetes, treatment includes healthy eating, physical activity, and blood glucose testing. Many people with type 2 may require oral medication to control their glucose levels. People with diabetes must take personal responsibility for their day-to-day care, and keep blood glucose levels from going too low or too high. The key to living a long and healthy life with diabetes is to learn about the disease, exercise daily, follow a diabetes food plan (right portions of healthy foods, less salt and fat), stop smoking, take prescribed medications, get routine medical care, brush your teeth and floss every day, monitor your blood glucose the way the doctor tells you to and remain positive. Using the correct routines, thousands of people with diabetes have lived long, happy and productive lives.

Tips For Easing The Pain Of Chidbirth

The best labor tips for an expectant mother are listed below. These tips are all based on relaxation. You will see why this is so important for your body. I hope you will find these labor tips for your natural childbirth helpful. RELAXATION

Relaxation is one of the most helpful techniques for pain relief. Let your body do what it is supposed to do. While your uterus is contracting, relax the rest of your body so your energy isn't working against you. Relaxation is something that should be practiced throughout your pregnancy. There are several different ways to do this. Working with your labor partner throughout your pregnancy to find out what works for you. For me, it was to have my husband stroke my hair. For someone else is may be massage. It's funny to think that relaxing is a SKILL. The following are some suggestions to try for relaxing.

* Massage

* bathing or showering

* listening to music

* deep breathing

* meditation

* Yoga poses

* visualization

MASSAGE

Massage is a wonderful labor tip. Having your partner give you a massage not only relaxes you but it also gives your partner a chance to be a part of the labor process. It promotes closeness and intimacy. And also, as I said above, relaxing takes practice, so that means that you'll also have to practice massage. You need to find out what works for you and what relaxes you. And heck, asking for practice massage is a good way for you to get a massage every week or so? Good idea huh gals?

Bathing or Showering

Bathing is an obvious labor tip. I shouldn't need to explain how wonderful a bath feels even if your aren't in labor. Just having the feeling of the water on your body is an instant massage. I have to say that taking a shower was the best way for me to deal with my labor pain. I just didn't ever want to get out of the shower.

Music

Music can be such a relaxing medium. It can take you to another plane of consciousness. It can also evoke such memories and choosing the right music that puts you in the place of total relaxation is a powerful feeling. This is something too, that should be practiced throughout your pregnancy. Experiment with different types of music and see what mood it puts you in. Try something new, you may be surprised. Another benefit of doing this is that having music surround you that comforts you during your pregnancy will make you a happier and more content pregnant woman. And we all know that a happy preggers makes for a happy baby. Your little one can also benefit from the tunes.

Deep Breathing

An often overlooked labor tip, breathing, is something that also needs practiced often during your pregnancy. Deep breathing can do wonders for a stressed out or nervous mom in labor. In Yoga it is called Pranayama breathing. This type of breathing can be detrimental in pain relief. Breathing correctly or concentrating on your breathing will help oxygenate your blood which in turn oxygenates the baby. I think this is such an important tool to use.

Meditation

Meditation is a deep form of relaxation. Being able to be still and concentrate on positive images instead of dwelling on pain can not only help with pain relief but can also help you along in your labor. For you,the laboring mom, to be able to be totally relaxed and to have a grip and feeling on what your body is doing and feeling can only speed up labor and have the body do what it knows how to do. Letting your mind relax and give your body the chance to do the work. Meditation can be anything from just sitting in a quiet room with peaceful thoughts, listening to soothing music, practicing the Pranayama breathing, or actually doing yoga. There are aids out there to help you practice meditating.

Yoga Poses

Practicing yoga during pregnancy can give you the tools you need to help with pain relief during labor. As stated above, the breathing techniques are of high value and if you have done yoga in the past you know the feeling you get right after your practice. You have a feeling of peace and inner strength. One of the most important poses to do during pregnancy is the cat or the Bidalasana pose. A variation of this pose is similar to the pelvic rock exercise. This position is so important because of the benefits to your body which in turn, benefit your baby. This exercise relieves pressure on the lower back and increases circulation and can improve digestion. But most important, is that this position gives the baby the most room for movement and can sometimes help in repositioning the baby from a breech position. This pose is also very helpful in labor. This pose was one that helped me the most. This pose is done by getting down on your hands and knees, knees spread shoulder width. Now, arch your back and then release, tilting your pelvis while doing this. During labor, just being in this position can help the pain, this position was very helpful to me during my labor.

Visualization

Visualization is a form of meditation. This should be practiced often as should all of these forms of relaxation. Try to pull out a memory of something positive, run this story over and over through your mind. Make this memory a trigger for you feeling peaceful and centered. you are getting very sleepy, you are getting very sleepy....OK Just wanted to make sure I still had ya ;) Think about the first time you met your partner and the things that made you get those butterflies... think about your favorite vacation when you were truly relaxed and content. maybe picture how you will feel when that precious little life is handed to you for the very first time.

Excitement of Educational Toys

To raise a child smart and bright,
The "tools" you use, are must be right!

To build a long-lasting beautiful house you will need: the right tools, the high quality material and a knowledgeable person to do that. Nobody will start building a house without proper education, great understanding and a proven plan. And no house can be built without strong and solid foundation.

Don’t you agree raising an intelligent, smart child is a similar process? Don’t you think that to be just a Parent is not enough? Don’t you feel we, as parents, have a great deal of responsibility; the "house" we are building should not collapse under the wind, should survive earthquakes and hurricanes? Do we have a sufficient education? Do we have "the right tools"? Do we use the materials of the highest quality? Sometimes, choosing the right answer is quite a puzzling task.

There is no need to get a bachelor degree in "parenting", and "diploma" is not required to raise a child. Clear vision, great determination and desire are essential in this challenging and exciting process. And it is crucially important to understand and be aware of what "the right tools" are. With tons of information and commercials coming our way every day, it is a bit confusing to make the best choice for your child. What should we consider: computer game or developmental puzzle game; electronic toy or simple educational wooden toy; Barbie doll or old-fashion bright hand puppet? With a lot of factors to think about, choosing the right toy of an educational, developing and learning nature is a very difficult job.

A child’s brain develops in a predictable sequence from the least complex functions to the most complex. The interaction of our genetic inheritance (nature) and environment (nurture) determines how child brain will develop. Providing our children with the right educational toys ensures ongoing stimulation and properly balanced child development. Our experiences affect our brain development. What we see, hear, smell, taste and touch are experiences, which make connections in our brain and make us smarter. Connections that we repeat become stronger. To find the most appropriate educational toys that stimulate child developmental, learning progress and fun for children to play with, it is vitally important. Choosing the right developmental toys and games will create the most wonderful and motivating experience for your child.

Ignite the passion for learning in your child with exciting and inspiring educational toys and games! There are many great child activities to try: color and shapes recognition, first letters and early reading, imaginative and logical thinking or basic math practice - just to name a few. There are games, which are easy to play, but teach like tutor, and the others - are exciting board games and stimulating activity for all family. Educational toys and games are simple and fun way to capture children's attention and interest. At the same time, they playfully challenge children to learn and master life essential skills.

Follow your own instincts; memorize your own childhood with books, games and "plain toys". Spend more quality time with your children, play and interact with them, read and tell them stories. Do not let your kids sit alone with electronic toy or in front of the computer or TV for long hours! Chose right, and enjoy watching your precious child growing strong, smart and capable of any achievement!
